Description: This photograph shows a bookplate of Flamen Ball, Jr. (1809-1885), a Cincinnati attorney who was a law partner of Salmon P. Chase. The design features a shield decorated with three stars above a lion. A leaping stag is located above the shield. A wreath of oak leaves is tied with an an armorial ribbon bearing the Latin motto "Semper caveto," meaning "Be always on guard." Born in New York City, Ball moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and studied law. Ball clerked for Chase before being admitted to the bar. He became United States District Attorney for Southern Ohio, but in 1862 he was commissioned a captain in the Union Army and served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. John E. Wool during the Civil War. After the war Ball resumed his law practice. He died in Glendale, Ohio, at age 76. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Lithograph illustration of Pittsburg Landing, the scene of the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee on January 19, 1862. The battle was named for the nearby Shiloh Methodist Church. This lithograph was created from an original sketch by Alfred E. Mathews of the 31st Regiment O.V.I., May 1862. Numerous steamboats can be seen along the shore, including the Silver Moon and the Glendale, and military tents can be seen in the distance. Mathews (1831-1874) was born in Bristol, England, but moved with his family to settle in Rochester, Ohio, when he was two years old. He was working as a schoolteacher in Alabama when the Civil War broke out, and returned north to enlist in the 1st Ohio Artillery in August 1861. He later joined the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in battles including Corinth, Stone River, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. During his three-year enlistment he drew numerous sketches of scenes he witnessed, which were made into lithographs and sold, including publication in Harper's Weekly. He moved west following the war and continued his work as an artist, until his sudden death at the age of 43. He is buried on his ranch near Longmount, Colorado. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through Lucas County, between stations 126 and 159. Roads, properties, and other landmarks along the route are noted, including a small group of plots along the canal identified as "Glendale by the River." The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.
